Friday’s Feature–Elizabeth Mitchell

When I was 8  months pregnant and so ready for my little Mona girl to arrive, I started making her mixed tapes (itunes playlistst, actually).  It’s so nerdy, I know.  And if you would have told me a year ago that I would be listening to children’s music I would have laughed in your face!  I am a true audiophile.  I love good music and would even consider myself a music snob.  But I bought a bunch of those Rockabye Baby albums–the Nirvana one, the Radiohead, even the Madonna one, and honestly, they are just annoying.  And Ramona certainly doesn’t care about them.   The bottom line, is that Music is something that is learned.  You can’t start a baby on a music diet of  Godspeed You Black Emperor  and expect her to dance and sing along.  So, I did my research–I mean I spent hours and hours looking for good music  that would hopefully get  Ramona excited about music and not drive me mad at the same time, and found Elizabeth Mitchell.  Amazing, Elizabeth Mitchell.  I’m not embarrassed to say that I am in love with her work.  It’s fun and folksy and features instruments like the banjo, tambourine, harmonica and acoustic guitar.  She sings along with her husband and daughter, Storey and  masters some of my favorite songs when I was a kid like, “Ladybug picnic”.  She has 4 albums, “You Are My Flower”, “You Are My Little Bird” , “You Are My Sunshine”, and my favorite, “Sunny Day”.   Sunny Day is my favorite because it features two songs written by 9-year-old Storey.  If you want start your day with a smile and sing with your babies, you seriously must check her out.  You can listen to clips and download her music on amazon here: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_1?url=search-alias%3Ddigital-music&field-keywords=elizabeth+mitchell

And just to get you warmed up… here are the lyrics to the classic, Skip to My Lou:

Skip, skip, skip to my lou, (3x)
Skip to my lou my darlin’

Bees and the butterflies, yellow and blue
Bees and the butterflies, yellow and blue
Elephants all sing cockadoodle-doo
Skip to my lou my darlin’

Ducks on the pond and a biscuit too
Ducks on the pond and a biscuit too
A funny little bunny with a hole in a shoe
Skip to my lou my darlin’

Crows in the cornfield, two by two
Crows in the cornfield, two by two
Flies in the sugar bowl, shoo fly shoo
Skip to my lou my darlin’

Hey, hey, skip to my lou
Hey, hey, skip to my lou
Skip, skip, skip to my lou
Skip to my lou my darlin’

Pretty little cow jumping over the moon
Pretty little cow jumping over the moon
I don’t know how but I wanna fly too
Skip to my lou my darlin’

Hey, hey, skip to my lou
Hey, hey, skip to my lou
Skip, skip, skip to my lou
Skip to my Lou my darlin’

Skip, skip, skip to my lou, (3x)
Skip to my lou my darlin’
